Karan Nagrani reached out to me soon after moving to Melbourne from Perth in early 2023. He describes himself as a disability advocate, public speaker and mental health warrior. He is a man of colour, part of the LGBTIQA+ community and has only 3 percent vision remaining. Born overseas he moved to Australia in 2006 and previously worked in marketing, graphic design and communications across the mining, energy and not-for-profit sectors. He is a remarkable guy.

Karan was needing personal branding photos because of his growing public profile. He was recently nominated as Blind Australian Of The Year and has been interviewed or featured on platforms including SBS and the ABC. In March 2023, Karan signed with Onya Soapbox who represent many well known Australians including Anh Do, Kate Celebrato, Anna Meares OAM, Dave Hughes, Cathy Freeman, Shaynna Blaze and Tim Minchin. He is definitely in good company.

Karan wanted colourful images that would appeal to a younger demographic. With this in mind we decided on an urban styled shoot in the backstreets and laneways of trendy Fitzroy. On a sunny Saturday morning in mid-March we spent several hours wandering the neighbourhood, taking images as we went. It was a privilege to get to know Karan and his husband who came along for our session. We laughed, experimented and collaborated and these disability advocate photos are the result of that session.

I ACKNOWLEDGE THE BUNURONG AND WURUNDJERI PEOPLE WHO ARE THE TRADITIONAL OWNERS OF THE LAND ON WHICH I PHOTOGRAPH.
I PAY MY RESPECTS TO THEIR ELDERS; PAST, PRESENT AND EMERGING.
