Farmgate Bulbs – Hancock’s Daffodils

2 Jacksons Hill Road, Menzies Creek

I have some, albeit slightly hazy, memories as a child of first visiting the annual display of daffodils at Hancock’s. Back then, in the mid 1980s, there was a giant daffodil made out of daffodils on the hill behind the farmgate and I LOVED that.

Hancocks’s can trace its history back over 100 years. It has been owned and operated by Christine and Will Ashburner since 2000, and theirs is the fourth family to have taken a turn being the custodians of the bulbs. Hancock’s have a daffodil breeding program and now offer 1,000 individual varieties of daffodils to Australian green thumbs.

Hancock’s Daffodils Display Garden

Every year, in September, the farm opens its display garden to the public. You can wander the raised garden beds and see a sample of the varieties on offer. There is complimentary tea and coffee and you can buy potted bulbs and cut flowers to take home with you. Outside of the display garden hours Hancock’s have a farmgate trolley where you can purchase seasonal bulbs and cut flowers and pop your money into a tin attached to the display.

Pre-order For Autumn Delivery

During Spring the bulbs are at their busiest, shooting and flowering, and this means you can’t purchase or plant them. You can however submit your order and have the bulbs shipped to you in February to April when they are dormant and ready to go into the ground.

Other Bulbs Available From Hancock’s Daffodils

In addition to dozens of varieties of daffodils and jonquils Hancock’s also farm a variety of other bulbs. These include lilies, irises, hyacinths, freesias, ranunculi, anemones and tulips. These bulbs offer a beautiful and colourful contrast to the predominantly yellow, cream, apricot and orange shades of the daffodils.

Final Words

After your visit to the display garden be sure to drive some of the surrounding roads to see paddocks of daffodils in flower. These are best viewed in the 500 metres in each direction of the roundabout at the corner of Belgrave-Gembrook Road with Grantulla Road and School Road.

If you are a true flower and garden lover here are some other retail nurseries in the Dandenongs which are must sees.
